ROLES & CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
*All roles are available. Must be 18+ to participate.
Please note: The suggested double casting may be changed based on auditions. Please prepare the roles as written below even if you think you may not fit the second role.
PRINCETON
20s–30s, Tenor (B2–G4)
Puppet character. A fresh-faced recent college grad with a B.A. in English and no idea what to do next. Naïve, sincere, and searching for his purpose. Needs strong emotional range.
KATE MONSTER
20s–30s, Mezzo with strong mix/belt (F3–F5)
Puppet character. Sweet, idealistic kindergarten assistant who dreams of opening a school for monsters. The emotional heart of the show but also grounded, practical and able to defend herself.
ROD
Tenor (B2–G4)
Puppet character. A conservative, uptight Republican banker with a big secret: he’s gay and in love with his roommate, Nicky. Requires nuanced comedic timing and genuine vulnerability beneath the humor.
*May also be cast as Bad Idea Bear or Trekkie Monster. Please prepare all three roles.
LUCY THE SLUT
Mezzo/Alto with belt (E3–E5)
Puppet character. Sultry nightclub singer and chaos magnet. Confident, unapologetic, and hilariously self-aware.
*May also be cast as Mrs. Thistletwat or Bad Idea Bear. Please prepare all three roles.
NICKY
Baritone (B2–B4)
Puppet character. Rod’s slacker roommate. Lovable, goofy, and endlessly optimistic.
*May also be cast as Trekkie or Bad Idea Bear. Please prepare all three roles.
TREKKIE MONSTER
Baritone (A2–B4)
Puppet character. Gruff, reclusive monster addicted to the internet. Despite his quirks, Trekkie has a big heart and surprising wisdom. Comedic gravelly voice.
*May also be cast as Nicky or Rod. Please prepare one of those roles.
BRIAN
20s–40s, Baritenor (B2–F#4)
Human character. Laid-back, well-meaning but perpetually unemployed stand-up comedian. Married to Christmas Eve. The grounding human among the chaos.
CHRISTMAS EVE
Mezzo with belt (B3–F5)
Human character. A strong, direct and very type-A therapist from Japan. Married to Brian. She is high-achieving and holds two masters degrees. Requires impeccable comic timing and emotional grounding.
*May also be cast as Mrs. Thisteltwat or Bad Idea Bear. Please prepare both roles.
*Please note Christmas Eve is written as a Japanese character. In this production, we are committed to portraying her cultural background respectfully. We welcome performers of all ethnicities to audition, with particular encouragement for actors of Asian descent to bring authenticity and insight to the role.
GARY COLEMAN
Human character. Any gender, often cast as Black female-presenting, Alto/Mezzo (D3–Bb5)
Former child star turned building superintendent. Street-smart, wise, and full of dry humor.
*May also be cast as Bad Idea Bear #2
MRS. THISTLETWAT
Mezzo (C4–D5)
Puppet character. Kate’s strict and judgmental boss. A comic cameo role with bite.
*May be double cast as Lucy the Slut. Please prepare both roles.
BAD IDEA BEARS (2 Roles)
Any gender, Vocal range flexible (C4–D5)
Puppet characters. Two cute, cuddly, high-energy creatures who gleefully encourage bad decisions…but in an over the top sweet way. Think adorable gremlins. Strong physical comedy and teamwork are essential.
